2022 has been a rollercoaster, to say the least.
I don’t know about you but the state of the world caused my energy to be at rock bottom regularly. It was reflected in my lack of motivation, zero desire to keep showing up, and an inability to stay focused.
I knew I had to change something, but I didn’t know where to start.
Then I listened to THIS PODCAST with Brené Brown + Karen Walrond on Finding Joy in the Midst of Struggle (which I highly recommend!!), and WOW, two of Karen’s revelations completely shifted my perspective.
REVELATION #1:
Life is an ebb and flow of changing seasons. We are not meant to be in GO-GO-GO mode all the time!
Right now I am in a season of raising little humans and all the extra stress that comes with it. My energy can be depleted by the time I drop them off in the morning, or immediately when someone wakes up sick and I know the day will look nothing like I had planned.
I am slowly learning to accept this. I am learning that if I try to fight the difficult days, not only do I still get nothing accomplished, but I am also tired and cranky.
Recognizing and embracing the fact that there are different life seasons that can shift throughout the year allows us to enter each day with gentleness. For me, some days the only important item on my to-do list is taking care of myself and my family. All other items can be checked off another day.
Full disclosure: This lesson is VERY hard for me, and I am still in the process of learning it! Do you find yourself fighting an uphill battle trying to stay in GO-GO-GO mode every day too??
REVELATION #2:
It is imperative we CHOOSE to find happiness daily - even if it is small, and even during difficult times.
Although I knew this to some extent, I definitely wasn’t making a practice of it.
But when we live life day after day without making happiness an absolute priority, we begin to lose our fight to stand up for what we believe in, and we lose our drive to go after our dreams.
I truly believe that once I made an intentional priority to do one joy-filled thing every day (even if it was sitting peacefully with my coffee for 5 minutes!), I noticed a mindset shift. More positivity, better focus and productivity, and much less of the frantic energy that would leave me exhausted at the end of the day.
The discussion of self-care and choosing happiness is everywhere right now.
But I am challenging us to intentionally make time for these necessities
DURING OUR WORKDAY.
Working through lunch and attending back-to-back-to-back Zoom meetings has become the new normal and this mindset is causing more pain, overwhelm and burnout. It drags us into a hole where we are emotionally, physically, and mentally drained; a hole we can’t easily climb out of when we delay our happiness for the end of the day or the weekend only.
It is not sustainable. YOU DESERVE TO WORK HAPPY.
SO HERE IS YOUR FIRST STEP:
Today I challenge you to pick one thing that will make your heart happy, one thing that is for you and you alone.
But here’s the catch: You have to do it DURING the workday.
It can be frivolous or energizing or calming, but most importantly, it needs to bring a smile to your face.
Some of my joy-filled workday activities include:
Choosing a favourite cup to sip from all day long.
Listening to an energizing song while taking a 5-minute mental break (bonus points for getting up and dancing to it!!)
Going outside to feel the sun on my skin and breathe the fresh summer air.
Buying a favourite treat from a nearby coffee shop.
Get out of the work headspace by making an intentional decision to CHOOSE YOU for a few minutes in the day, and see how you feel!
